This week in social media news: Facebook rolls out new video features, Twitter launches a feature to hide replies, Instagram and Facebook make new rules regarding diet/weight loss/cosmetic surgery posts and Youtube updates their requirements for “verified” accounts.
New Facebook Video Features
According to TechCrunch, Facebook has rolled out new video features specifically designed for professional broadcasters who have Facebook Pages (not just Facebook profiles).
One of these updates is for Live Videos. Publishers will now be able to “rehearse” their live videos with Page administrators and editors before actually going live to their audience.
Source: Facebook The live broadcast time limit increased from 4 hours to 8 hours and publishers can now trim the beginning and end of the live videos through the app.
Facebook will also allow publishers to simultaneously broadcast to multiple streaming services at the same time through the Live API.
Facebook has also updated features on Watch Party allowing publishers to schedule parties in advance, tag business partners, support replays and has new analytics.
Twitter Releases Feature to “Hide Replies”
Twitter has launched a new feature in the US and Japan that allows users to hide replies, according to TechCrunch. BUT this does not mean they are deleted.
Source: TechCrunch On Facebook and Instagram posts, users can delete any comments that they don’t want to appear. On Twitter, “hiding” a comment will only put it behind another click.
Users will still be able to click to see “hidden replies” but only if they feel like taking that extra step. The idea is that the majority of people won’t see the comment.
Twitter said that this feature is still being tested and it is not available to users worldwide yet.
Instagram and Facebook Limit Diet and Cosmetic Surgery Posts
Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri announced on Twitter that Instagram and Facebook are rolling out new policies that will restrict or remove certain posts about weight loss products and cosmetic surgery.
Source: TwitterThese topics are of particular concern to young people and their mental health. Instagram hopes these new policies will help reduce the pressures some people feel from the “unrealistic standards” of social media.
As reported by the Guardian, “posts that promote the use of certain weight-loss products or cosmetic procedures, which have an incentive to buy or include a price, will be hidden from users known to be under 18.”
Posts about “miraculous” diets or weight loss products that are linked to a commercial offer will be entirely removed.

Youtube Updates Verification Program
On most social media sites, if a user is “verified” they have a check mark next to their name. Users are verified for things like number of followers, status and job titles.
Youtube is updating their verification requirements and stripping some users of their verified status.
Here is how Youtube said they are determining if the channel meets the verified criteria:
Authenticity: Does this channel belong to the real creator, artist, public figure or company it claims to represent?Prominence: Does this channel represent a well-known or highly searched creator, artist, public figure or company? Is this channel widely recognized outside of YouTube and have a strong presence online? Is this a popular channel that has a very similar name to many other channels?But is this foolproof? Because even the official Youtube channel lost verification and tons of “big name” Youtube stars are already filing complaints about losing their status.
Two million subscribers seems like it would meet the requirement of “well-known.” It will be interesting to see if Youtube responds to this backlash and updates their requirements again.
